Skiing in Iran

In recent years, Iran has been attracting the flood of tourists from different countries due to its potentials, rich culture, historical attractions, unique nature, warm and hospitable people, and above of all its safety.

In the meantime, tourists, as soon as they hear the name of Iran, historical monuments and attractions, and maybe Iranian deserts comes to their minds. Unfortunately, this is a misconception of Iran. Because of Iran, with a surface area of about 1,700,000 km2 with a quadrilateral dimension, that more than half of its land covered by mountains, is considered a country of four climates and seasons. It means that, as you are skiing in the north of Iran, you can take a one-hour flight to southern Iran and surfing in the Persian Gulf and its beautiful islands. Because of this mountainous nature, Iran has become one of the richest and best destinations for skiers in recent years.

The history of skiing in Iran backs to 1946 when the Iranian Ski Federation was established. However, hundreds of years earlier, people who live in mountainous cities of Iran (such as Firoozkooh), attaching woods, leathers and other materials under their shoes, to move more easily and void dipping on snow in the winters. So skiing in Iran has an old history.

Today, given the existence of high and vast mountains in Iran, it is possible to carry out various types of ski courses in different seasons. Alpine or downhill skiing, Ski Touring, Cross-country skiing, Freestyle skiing, Snowboarding, Off-piste skiing, Telemark Skiing, Free Ride Skiing and Backcountry Skiing are the Skiing style that is favourite of tourists and you can do them in Iran mountains. Also, Gross Skiing, Sandboarding and Skiing on Sands on deserts, and Water Skiing are common in Iran and attract many tourists to Iran every year.

In general, skiing in the mountains of Iran can be divided into two separate categories. Skiing in ski resorts or Skiing in pistes, and skiing outside of the tracks/pists in Iran’s wild mountains. Although these two categories are combined in some areas, because each has its own fans, we provide the following explanations for each of them separately.

On Piste skiing is one of the skiing methods that, in addition to being exciting, allows you to use the lift equipment, as well as comfort and safety. Different types of skiing can be carried out inside the ski pistes of Iran. Competitive and recreational, such as Cross-country, Ski jumping, Combined, Downhill, Extreme, Speed, Super-G, Telemark skiing, Alpine, Snowboarding, Boardercross and etc. But most common skiing style in Iranian pistes is Alpine skiing, Speed, Snowboarding and Boardercross. Currently, the Iranian National Ski Team is working in three fields: Alpine, Cross Country and Snowboarding.

As mentioned, more than half of Iran covered by mountains. So we have many ski resorts in Iran, with different facilities and difficulties that in the following are briefly presented.

Iran Off-Piste Skiing (Outside of the Tracks/Resorts)

The easiest and first thing that comes to the mind, from the “Off-Piste skiing in Iran” is to take your ski equipment and skiing in the mountains of Iran (of course, outside of ski resorts). This is the correct understanding. But to find out which kind of off-piste skiing, are possible in the mountains of Iran, first we need to know Off-Piste skiing categories?

Off-piste Skiing in the general meaning, is skiing outside of the resort, but when we look carefully at this field, we know that it has several distinct branches that it is very difficult to distinguish between them.

Slackcountry skiing, Sidecountry skiing, Freeride skiing, Backcountry skiing, Splitboarding, Ski touring, Ski mountaineering are of the fields that are in the off-piste subset.

The difference between these fields can be seen by two factors of the amount of skiers experiences, as well as the distance between the ski area and the resorts. For example, Slackcountry skiing or Sidecountry skiing, that runs around ski resorts, and by uses of lifting equipment, or skitouring or ski mountaineering in remote mountains without the help of lifting equipment.

Anyway, what’s important is that, thanks to the vast and high mountains, Iran is the golden paradise for the world’s off-piste skiers. In this way, all of the branches of Off-Piste skiing, Slackcountry skiing, Sidecountry skiing, Freeride skiing, Backcountry skiing, Splitboarding, Ski touring, Ski Montinaring, are available in Iran’s mountains. Among these branches, Ski Turing, Off-Piste Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Speed Riding (Downhill Skiing and flying by fabric wings) is more than any other interested in Iran.

Undoubtedly, in the cold season (mid- November to the end June), you can skiing(Specially Ski Touring, Off-Piste skiing & Ski Mountaineering) in most mountains of Iran. It’s really hard to say that, off-piste skiing in which mountains in Iran is better than the other mountains.

Iran is a country where more than half of it is covered by mountains, and has more than 600 peaks above 4000 meters and 15,000 peaks above 3000 meters. So if you’re an off-piste skier (Ski Touring, Off-Piste skiing & Ski Mountaineering), It’s not difficult to finding a mountain for ski. Just travel to one of the mountainous cities of Iran in the cool season, to tempt you for ski, by seeing the full snows mountains.

However, some of these mountainous areas are more prestigious than the rest of the mountains because of their pristine and remoteness. At the top of this list, Mount Damavand, the highest peak in Iran and the Middle East, as well as Asia’s highest volcano sits. Absolutely, can say that the ski touring on Mount Damavand is the main purpose of most skier who comes to Iran for skiing. Because, with the ascent of Damavand by ski, they reach two goals. They climb the highest peaks of Iran and highest volcano of Asia (and part of the Seven Summit Project), and also enjoy skiing in Damavand with long and good slopes.

As mentioned, in Iran other than Damavand, there are many other mountains that are a good destination for skiers. Doberar Mountain Ridge, with more than 70 km long and 35 summits with 3000 m and 4000 m altitude, makes a best goal for skiers who want to skiing in Iran. Imagine, skiing in 4000m summit in one day, best scenery, perfect slopes and good snow condition, then drinking a cup of tea in Polour/Raineh guesthouses while you share your beautiful pictures of Skiing in Doberar ridge with your friends and family.

Alamkoh 4850m, Iran’s second highest peak of Iran, with more than 40 summits (3000m and 4000m) around it (Takht-e-Soleiman area), is the other amazing goal for skiing. All Ski touring, Free riding, Back country skiing, are possible in Alamkoh area.

Ski touring in Sabalan 4811m, third highest summit of Iran in northwest, is a dreamy plan for foreign skiers who come to Iran.

Maybe you would like to enjoy skiing without climbing the highest mountains of Iran. No worries, you can go to the Zagros Mountains and choose your ski area with yourself. The Zagros range starts from the northwest of Iran with a length of approximately 1600 km and a width of about 80 km to the south of Iran. The mountains of Chelgerd in Chaharmahal, Alvand mountains in Hamedan, Qandil in Kurdistan, Oshtorankoh in Lorestan, Zardkoh Mountains in Koohrang Bakhtiari, and Dena in Yasuj are among the best mountainous areas of Zagros mountain range, for the skitouring and other ski sports.
